Do I need special tools to work with
Millennium Decking?
Millennium Decking works like wood and in some ways
works easier. It can be cut, drilled and routed using
regular tools. When cutting, use a 24 tooth carbide
tipped blade or finer.
What types of fasteners are recommended for Millennium
Decking?
Screws are determined by the structure to which
the decking is being attached; usually lumber, but some
times aluminum channel as with some dock kits. Ask your
dealer which screws are recommended (hot dipped galvanized,
stainless steel, ceramic coated or other) for the structural
material you are working with, and conditions such as
exposure to salt water.
Because we use wood flour rather than wood strands
or wood chips, there is no grain or orientation in the
material. Drilling pilot holes is generally not required.
See the Millennium Decking Installation Guide for further
details on Screws & Glues.
Does Millennium Decking come with a warranty?
Millennium Decking has a 20 Year Limited NON
PRO-RATED Warranty.
see Product Warranty
Can Millennium Decking be used for posts or joists?
While Millennium Decking is tough and durable, it
is not intended for use as a load bearing post, joist
or other primary load bearing part of a structure. The
fascia board is used as cladding for rim joists, posts
and backs of stair risers.
What spacing do I use for my deck joists?
We recommend that you install joists on 16" centers,
12” centers for stairs.
Can Millennium be installed over existing decking or plywood?
No. Due to the fact that Millennium expands and contracts less than wood and plywood, doing so would compromise its tongue and groove aspect. Screwing directly to the joists is the only recommended installation technique. Failure to comply with this will void Millennium's 20 year warranty.
What will water do to Millennium Decking?
When wood absorbs water, it will swell and as wood
dries out, it will shrink. Cracking, splitting and rotting
can follow. This generally does not occur with Millennium
Decking (in documented history) as the PVC
fully surrounds (encapsulates) the wood flour. Also,
because we use wood flour rather than wood strands or
wood chips, there are no strands that connect or contact
each other. Moisture will not enter the boards through
capillary or wicking action along the wood fiber.
Can you make Millennium Decking a waterproof membrane?
No. Millennium Decking is not intended to be a waterproof membrane and should not be used where one is required. Although it is a tight tongue and groove design, water can still get between the boards.
Can Millennium Decking be painted or stained?
No. Millennium Decking absorbs very little - so paint
or stain will not penetrate.
How do I care for my Millennium Deck?
All you need to do is clean your deck periodically.
A soapy mop and a garden hose work well! A low-pressure
power washer can also be used.
see Care & Cleaning
How should I transport and store Millennium Decking before installation?
Millennium Decking is weighted similarly to wood but
is more flexible. When moving boards, lift from two
balanced midpoints. Store on a flat surface. Cover if
stored outdoors for an extended period of time before
installation.
How does Millennium Decking react to hot and cold weather conditions?
Because of its formulation and unique production process,
Millennium Decking has a low coefficient of thermal
expansion and contraction. (the amount a material expands
or contracts when heated or cooled). The coefficient
for Millennium Decking is very close to wood so the
decking expands and contracts at a rate similar to the
wood structure. This is preferable to materials having
either higher or lower coefficients as allowances have
to be made for dissimilar movement of differing materials.
Will insects damage Millennium Decking?
Millennium Decking is highly resistant to insect attacks as the wood fibers are encapsulated in the PVC creating a barrier to insects.
Will Millennium Decking fade or change color?
Minimal product fading will occur, comparable to PVC
siding; also slight color variation may be apparent
from board to board as it is a wood based product.
